The Mayor of Santos, Paulo Alexandre Barbosa (PSDB), participated in a meeting this Friday afternoon (8) in the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, where he presented to the São Paulo state government the demands of the Baixada Santista to face the pandemic of Covid -19. At the meeting, requests were made to expand the number of hospital beds in Santos and Praia Grande and to restrict access to the region through the Anchieta Immigrants System (SAI).

The issues were brought up in the capital at the time the state government announced the extension of the quarantine until May 31, as a way to contain the spread of the disease and prevent overcrowding in hospital beds.

According to the municipal administration, the mayor met with Governor João Doria, Lieutenant Governor Rodrigo García and the Secretaries of State for Health, José Henrique Germann, and Regional Development, Marco Vinholi.

According to Barbosa, who chairs the Baixada Santista Development Council (Condesb), he addressed demands such as the expansion of beds in the Vitória Hospital, in Santos, and also in Praia Grande, so that it is possible to serve the region as a whole. .

Another concern expressed by him was the transit of people between the plateau and the coast, which he claims to have reiterated as a need to restrict access to the Anchieta Immigrants System to prevent tourists from going to Baixada Santista, which contributes to the dissemination of coronavirus.

During a statement on the extension of the São Paulo quarantine, the creation of the Municipal Council of the State of São Paulo was announced, which brings together mayors from 15 metropolitan regions plus the Capital. Group meetings will be held weekly.

The objective is to make the actions of the city councils and the state government more and more consortiums, aggregates and regionalized in the fight against the new coronavirus.

Baixada Santista’s representative on the council, Paulo Alexandre Barbosa, said that this will be another space to attend to the main needs of Santos and neighboring cities.
