The Ministry of Health changed the guidelines for the use of doses of the coronaVac covid-19 vaccine. With the change, the federal government now allows health departments to use 100% of the doses distributed on March 16, 17 and 20 as the first dose, without the need to reserve a portion of the immunizer for the application of second doses.
The new guideline was communicated in the ministry’s seventh technical report. The folder said that new reports like this will be distributed weekly.
The measure adopted now responds to the request of the National Front of Mayors. The possibility of not reserving doses for the second application had previously been suggested by local governments, but the uncertainty about the availability of the immunizer for the application of the second doses within the appropriate period prevented this policy from being applied.
According to the mayor of Aracaju, Edvaldo Nogueira (PDT), representative of the Front, the municipal representatives had requested permission to use 90% of the doses as the first dose about a month ago, but at that time they were not authorized.
In an interview with GloboNews, Edvaldo Nogueira affirmed that this new orientation is “very positive news.” For him, there is now a greater regularity in the production and distribution of vaccines, which will allow to follow this new guideline without causing major problems.
Chrystina Barros, a researcher at the UFRJ and a member of the covid-19 coping group, also spoke with GloboNews this afternoon and considered that the decision is correct. “It is a wise decision, but it is essential that work is done so that the second dose arrives on time,” he said. “If not, we run the risk of not having advanced in this effort and even compromising in some way the coverage, efficiency and effectiveness of the vaccine,” he added.
