Vice President Hamilton Mourão said on Tuesday (16), after the announcement of the third change of command in the Ministry of Health since the start of the pandemic, that the minister only executes the decisions of the president. That is why, in the vice president’s opinion, President Jair Bolsonaro is “responsible for everything that happens or stops happening.”

Mourão commented in an interview about the election of cardiologist Marcelo Queiroga to replace General Eduardo Pazuello at the head of the Ministry of Health, announced on Monday (15) by Bolsonaro.

Pressured by the most critical moment of the pandemic, with almost 280,000 deaths, a shortage of vaccines and a lack of ICU beds in hospitals, Bolsonaro decided to dismiss Pazuello and appoint the fourth minister since the beginning of the pandemic, a little more than one year. However, the exchange has not yet been published in the ‘Official Gazette’.

“The role of the minister that defines, is the one who makes the decisions, the President of the Republic. The minister is an executor of the decisions of the President of the Republic. Even so, then, the president is responsible for everything that happens or stops happening, this is the reality, “said Mourão.

Queiroga and Pazuello began a transition of command in the portfolio on Tuesday, given the doubts of politicians and health authorities about independence to modify the policy to combat Covid-19. Arriving at a meeting with Pazuello, Queiroga declared that “the Minister of Health carries out the government’s policy.”

Asked Mourão about the phrase of the new Health Minister, the vice president agreed that the minister only executes the president’s decisions.
