Most of the Juiz de Fora hospitals have high ICU bed occupancy rates for the treatment of Covid-19. ICU occupancy in the Unified Health System (SUS) reached 87.62%, on Thursday afternoon (4), according to the Covid-19 Panel of the Juiz de Fora City Council (PJF), around 2:00 p.m. 30 hours. The municipal administration considers that the increase in the occupation of the city’s beds is a reflection of the national scenario after the carnival and of another important factor: the spread of new variants of the coronavirus in Minas Gerais.
According to data from the PJF, the Therezinha de Jesús Maternity had the most worrying rate, with 100% occupancy, and then there was the University Hospital, with 95.45%, and the João Felício Hospital, with 95%. In the 80% occupancy range, the panel showed the hospitals Santa Casa (85.45%), João Penido and Hospital de Pronto Socorro (85%) and Ana Nery (82.14%). Then came the Unimed Hospital, with 75%.
In the other five units presented by the panel, occupancy ranged between 60% and 50%. They are: Monte Sinai and the Oncology Institute (66.67%), Ascomcer (60%), São Vicente de Paulo (55.56%) and Albert Sabin (54.84%). The data is based on information obtained from the website of the Juiz de Fora City Council.
382 cases of hospitalization due to Covid
According to the panel, the city already had, by early afternoon, 382 cases of hospitalization for Covid cases, with 135 occupied ICU beds and 247 occupied wards. The increase in the ICU occupancy rate in the Unified Health System (SUS) occurs after a period of stable index, such as the month of February, which had a daily average of 295 hospitalizations.
The number of people hospitalized for coronavirus again surpassed 300 cases on Sunday (February 28), when it reached the mark of 318. Of that total, on that date, there were 125 hospitalizations in the ICU and 193 in the ward. Four days later, patients hospitalized in the city due to Covid-19 rose to 382, an increase of 64 cases.
The numbers of patients hospitalized more than 382 in the city, in 2021, were registered only in January, the month in which the city reached its peak with 421 people hospitalized only on the 13th, 151 in ICU beds and 270 in the living room.
Infectologist warns of the risk of underreporting
The doctor in infectious diseases Rodrigo Daniel, responsible for the Health Surveillance Sector of the University Hospital (HU) of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), considers that it is still too early to attribute the high rates of bed occupancy to the new variants of the coronavirus. “There is still no confirmation of so many cases caused by the variants,” he said, adding that “in fact, there may not have been a drop, in fact, in the number of cases, as previously thought, as there may be be underreporting “.
For him, the population needs to have access to diagnostic tests for Covid-19, a fact that contributes to the numbers better translating the reality of this pandemic scenario. “People have a hard time understanding how to access exams. Various categories can be tested by SUS, but there is no clear disclosure about this possibility yet. People need to know that whoever has symptoms can go to Primary Care and be able to take the test for free. The population has the wrong notion that only those who are hospitalized can undergo SUS tests. Various categories and patients with risk factors are eligible for the test free of charge. This possibility exists since last year and people need to know it, “he said, recalling that citizens can make a medical appointment and have the referral for the test through the SUS.
He does not rule out the impacts of crowds during the carnival period to increase the occupancy of beds and explains that ICU occupancy occurs late, which generates a greater volume of patients after a certain time. The infectologist is emphatic in warning that social distance is the main measure against the coronavirus, along with the habitual use of the mask.
The City Council identifies two groups as the most affected
When positioning itself by the Tribuna de Minas regarding the high occupancy rates of ICU beds destined for the treatment of Covid-19, the Juiz de Fora City Council, through the Ministry of Health, pointed out that, “as evidenced by the Panel Covid -19, there is an increase in the number of confirmed cases in the last 14 days, which went from 85 to the average of 171, in the last 24 hours ”. Depending on the folder, it is also possible to notice that there are two age groups among the most affected groups. The first is between 30 and 39 years old, which has 4,784 cases, which represents 23.5% of those infected. The second, that of people over 60 years of age, with 4,296, which represents 21% of those infected.
According to the Ministry of Health, eleven ICU Covid beds were created at the beginning of January, which represents 10% of the new beds in the municipality. This expansion, according to the folder, “helped alleviate the situation that, at this moment, could be worse, since the occupancy rate of the beds in the ICU Covid-19 is 87.62% (around 2:00 p.m. 30 hours)”. As a way to combat the advance of Covid-19, the PJF pointed out that more restrictive actions were taken in the city with the return to the red belt of the Juiz de Fora por la Vida Program. Furthermore, previously, the Juiz de Fora City Council had already canceled, in February, the optional option for municipal public servants as a way to avoid trips during the carnival season and thus avoid an increase in contagion ”, he stressed.
Maintain social distance
The Health Department stressed that the best measure to control the situation is to maintain social distance. “Strong participation and popular awareness are needed to combat the spread of the virus and prevent hospitalizations, with the use of masks and the maintenance of hygiene habits, such as washing hands and using alcohol gel.”
The folder also warns of the need to look for Basic Health Units (UBS) early, right at the beginning of the onset of symptoms (at least two symptoms). In places without UBS coverage, look for the Covid-19 PAM Marechal Center, open from 7 am to 11 am and from 1 pm to 5 pm. In case of signs of severity, shortness of breath, shortness of breath or respiratory distress, care should be sought in case of urgency and emergency.
