The risk that a person who does not respect quarantine in the city of São Paulo will be contaminated with the new coronavirus is almost double that of someone who strictly follows the rules of social distance. The information is from the mayor’s office, which today revealed the results of its most recent serological survey, which indicates “stability of the disease in the city,” according to Mayor Bruno Covas (PSDB).
The study, designed to find out if residents have ever had contact with the virus, also indicates that infections now affect people of different regions, income, education and colors in a slightly more equal way.
According to the investigation, covid-19 mainly affects the population that admits to ignore or social isolation: among those people, a percentage of 19.2% of contaminated, inquanto this proportion fell for 11.4% among those who guarantee leaving home. Among those who leave to work or carry out essential activities, the prevalence is 13.6%.
- 72% said leaving home just to work or perform essential activities
- 15% say they do not leave home
- 13% admit to ignoring quarantine
The city also asked about the type of social contact that is maintained.
- 61.7% said they had had contact with restricted groups of friends and co-workers.
- 29.9% say they only know people who live in the same house
- 8.4% admit not restricting their contacts
Among those who ignore the quarantine, 20% have already been infected with the new coronavirus, compared to 9.5% of those who do not receive visits even from family or friends.
The rich remain more protected
For the first time, the survey reports that the difference in the percentage of people already infected is no longer very different between blacks, browns and whites.
- 14.5% of the blacks and browns analyzed have had contact with the virus.
- 13.3% of whites have also been infected
In January, this percentage was 15.6% (black and brown) and 12.8% (white).
The survey also compared the prevalence of covid-19 by HDI (Human Development Index). The percentage of infected in regions with medium HDI was 16.4%, close to the incidence in neighborhoods with low HDI (16.2%).
In noble locations, with a high HDI, the possibility of contracting covid-19 is 6.3%.
“The prevalence in the HDI range is still lower among the high ones, and there was an approximation of the average and low HDI of the city, which shows the social division in the presence of the disease”, said the Secretary of Health, Edson Aparecido .
Back to classes
The Undersecretary of Education, Minea Paschoaleto Fratelli, confirmed the return of classes in the municipal school system as of next Monday (15). According to her, an undisclosed group of schools “undergoing renovations or changing their contract for cleaning services” will only return in person as of February 22.
“But classes start for everyone on the 15th,” he said. “Whoever returns on the 22nd will stay connected until then.”
Covas reaffirmed that only 35% of students will be able to attend classes in the capital, even in private schools.
“The city does not distinguish between public and private schools. The virus is the same, it does not make sense to make any kind of distinction for students,” he said. “Only when health surveillance is calm with the return of 35% will we change this proportion.”
