The Maranhão government backed down and lifted the ban on events that would begin tomorrow and last 14 days, as one of the measures to contain the advance of the new coronavirus pandemic in the state.

This afternoon, in a speech, the Secretary of State for Health, Carlos Eduardo Lula, stated that as of tomorrow the holding of each and every event was suspended for 14 days, regardless of the number of people. However, the secretary reported hours later that for now he will not adopt the suspension of events.

Now, Ordinance No. 55, which deals with small events across the state, remains in effect and events with a capacity of up to 150 people are posted. Despite this, Carnival parties, whether in public or private places, are prohibited by the Maranhão government.

“Given the facts in the events segment, we decided, for the moment, not to adopt the measure of suspending small events that would start tomorrow. We will speak with those involved and the Public Ministry throughout the week to deliberate on the matter, “wrote Carlos Eduardo Lula on Twitter.

Among the restrictions announced today by the government is a 50% reduction in the number of elective surgeries and outpatient consultations during the period throughout the state health network.

Yesterday, the occupancy in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds reached 81.08% and the beds in the infirmary reached 73.33% in the health units of São Luís and in the municipalities of São José de Ribamar ( MA), Raposa (MA) and Paço do Lumiar (MA), located in the metropolitan region.

The city of Imperatriz, the second largest city in the interior of Maranhão, registered the most critical occupancy rate for ICU beds, with 90.63% occupancy. The government reported that there was also a significant increase in the number of hospitalizations of people with covid-19 in the municipalities of Santa Inês (MA), Pinheiro (MA) and Balsas (MA).

The epidemiological bulletin of the SES (State Department of Health) published today shows that 205,621 people in Maranhão were infected with the new coronavirus and 4,653 died as a result of covid-19. There are currently 6,648 active cases of the disease in the state and 194,320 people have recovered from COVID-19.

“The cities of São Luís, Santa Inês, Pinheiro, Balsas and Imperatriz reached critical occupancy rates for their beds, which have not been seen for a long time. Regulatory data indicates that the number of beds requested, either in the ICU or in nursing, it refers to the data we had in June of last year. What we want is to avoid new cases and ensure that the system can serve those who need it, “said Secretary Carlos Lula.

Increase in cases among young people

The secretary said he found that there was an increase in COVID-19 cases among the young and middle-aged population. Most of the patients are male, between 50 and 65 years old, with or without comorbidities, with moderate to severe clinical status, active in the labor market and with young children. The other profile is that of young patients in ICU beds, between 24 and 35 years old, without any type of comorbidity who present a serious clinical condition.

“Today, more than 10% of the ICU beds at the Carlos Macieira Hospital are with patients who are not 35 years old in serious condition, without comorbidity, young intubated. The scenario leads us to take the necessary measures ”, Carlos reinforced. Squid.

Yesterday, Governor Flávio Dino (PCdoB) pointed out that the state expanded vaccination coverage against covid-19, placing patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and / or hemodialysis treatments in the priority group of this phase of the Bell. Maranhão received 48,500 doses of the Oxford / AstraZeneca novel coronavirus vaccine over the weekend.

“Unfortunately, we have noticed that, in recent days, there has been a trend of growth in cases with hospitalization. Therefore, we have adopted a series of measures. We have strengthened the guidelines for the expansion of the state health network for cases of coronavirus In the next few days we will deliver the expansion of the ICU beds in the city of Imperatriz, the new Açailândia polyclinic and another 50 beds in the Aquiles Lisboa hospital in São Luís ”, reported Flávio Dino.

Carnival parties prohibited

The Governor of Maranhão ressaltou that Carnival parties are prohibited, public or private, as well as the control of the use of a facial protection mask will be intensified to reduce or contagion of new coronavirus and other flu syndromes, which will increase the incidence in this period of chuvas in the state.

I highlight the essentiality of preventive measures: the suspension of Carnival parties, both in public and private environments, and we will once again emphasize the inability of the use of masks in public places, because in addition to protecting against the new coronavirus, their use helps to prevent other flu syndromes that mark this rainy season in Maranhão ”, informed the governor of Maranhão.
