California recommends suspending Moderna’s Covid vaccine

In a press release, California’s chief epidemiologist Erica Pan said the recommendation came “out of extreme caution.”

The California Department of Public Health recommended on Wednesday (20) a temporary interruption of the distribution of a batch of the vaccine from the pharmaceutical company Moderna, because “a greater number of people” show signs of a possible allergic reaction. US health officials are investigating the cases, which were treated at a San Diego clinic.

More than 330,000 doses of the specific lot were distributed to 287 vaccination points in California. According to the manufacturer, 37 states received vaccines from the same batch, for a total of 1.2 million nationwide. However, no adverse side effects have yet been reported in other states.

In a press release, California’s chief epidemiologist Erica Pan said the recommendation came “out of extreme caution,” after few immunized people at the same health center had evidence of severe allergic reactions.

“A higher than normal number of possible allergic reactions were reported with a specific lot of Moderna vaccine administered at a community vaccination clinic. Fewer than 10 people required medical attention during the 24-hour period,” the text says. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are reviewing the vaccine lot.
