The São Paulo government requested authorization from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) for the emergency use of another 4.8 million doses of the Coronavac vaccine, produced by Butantã and the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, in addition to the 6 million doses of the immunizer that are in national territory. The information was relayed by the governor. João Doria (PSDB), during a press conference on Monday morning 18. Follow the press conference:
The vaccination began this Sunday 17 with the application of a dose in the nurse Mónica Calanzas, an employee of the Emílio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases. This Monday, the immunizer is distributed to the regions of Botucatu, Campinas, Marília, Ribeirão Preto and São José do Rio Preto. Another 4.5 million doses of the Coronavac vaccine are being shipped to other states by the Ministry of Health.
The authorization granted by Anvisa on Sunday was for the use of doses shipped directly from China to São Paulo. In addition to the ready doses, Sinovac had sent material for Butantã to produce the new 4 million doses and, therefore, the need for a new authorization.
“Butantã strives to increase the amount of raw material. We have a batch ready and we are waiting for authorization from the Chinese government (to import), ”said the president of the Butantã Institute, Dimas Covas.
The contract between Sinovac and Butantã provides for the shipment of 46 million doses of the immunizer to São Paulo, but Covas could not give a deadline for the other doses to reach the state. Asked about it, he replied: “‘It will come’ASAP as soon as possible‘. The sooner this matter is published, the better for everyone ”, not to mention the dates. “It is about the arrival of the raw material, so as not to stop production,” he added, later, specifying that Butantã already has the capacity to produce 1 million doses of the vaccine per day, as long as there is raw material.
Worst epidemiological week
Amid the positive climate ahead of the start of vaccination, the State Secretary of Health, Jean Gorinchteyn, stressed that the spread of covid-19 continues at an accelerated rate in the state. “We had the worst epidemiological week since the start of the pandemic,” Gorinchteyn said, citing a 77% increase in the number of new cases from the previous week and more than 50% in the total number of deaths. Hospitalizations had an increase of about 30%.
“Today would be a day when we should be celebrating the arrival of vaccines. We know that we still have few vaccines to immunize the entire state, ”said the secretary. Citing the lack of coordination with the Ministry of Health, Gorinchteyn said that “we are going to vaccinate the much more vulnerable population, the elderly and people with comorbidity, very late.”
The State of São Paulo exceeded the rate of 70.1% of capacity in beds of Intensive Care Units (ICU). There are 6,004 people occupying these beds. The state is expected to reach 50,000 deaths this Monday. There are 1,628,272 confirmed cases of the disease in São Paulo.
The secretary also affirmed that, given the increase in cases, the State keeps “on the radar” the reactivation of field hospitals to serve the population. “We are already expanding beds within hospitals and also hiring private hospitals. And we don’t take field hospitals off the radar, ”he said.
The point of care, according to Gorinchteyn, is the assurance of doctors, nurses, nursing assistants and physical therapists to care for patients and patients with other illnesses. “We are attentive to everything: to this issue of the number of beds as well as the human resources to serve the population.”
Before the stage, the secretary made a new call for people to stay home and, if it is necessary for them to leave the house, put on a mask, avoid crowds and wash their hands.
