The Secretary of Health of Amazonas, Marcellus Campêlo, said yesterday that the state society opted for the transmission of the coronavirus, according to a publication of the newspaper O Globo. The declaration comes amid the lack of hospital oxygen for the Amazonians.
Campêlo said, according to the publication, that the state government did everything possible to avoid the current scenario. “Despite the warnings, the decrees, the society made the decision to maintain the crowds, participate in the fraternizations, celebrate New Year’s Eve, hold clandestine parties, mainly,” he said.
Alerted about the possibility that the end of the year holidays collapse in local health, the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (PSC), determined the closure of non-essential services for 15 days at the end of 2020 in order to reduce the movement of people. and, thus, reduce transmission risks.
After being pressured by business representatives, the governor turned away. The decision was widely celebrated by the political supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro (no party).
Campêlo avoided directly criticizing the governor, despite this. “The governor relaxed some measures, but if they were met, they would have been greatly reduced. The population, businessmen, society in general could not carry out, comply with the determinations,” he said.
The Health Ministry, for its part, had a week to act and prevent the collapse of the oxygen supply in Manaus, but took measures of little scope given the magnitude of the crisis. The folder was communicated on the situation on January 7, the same day as the Amazonas Health Secretariat. A week later, on January 14, oxygen began to run out.
