Some 2,500 people took part in an illegal New Year’s Eve party in northwestern France, prompting violent clashes with police, who were unable to stop them, and raising concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, authorities said on Friday (1).

The event took place in Lieuron, south of Rennes, in the department of Brittany. Many were still in place when a sanitary cordon was installed at the party.

The city said in a statement that local officials tried “to avoid the celebration, but faced fierce hostility from many guests,” who set fire to one of their cars and threw stones and bottles.

The party brought together participants from all over France and also from abroad.

Mass gatherings are strictly prohibited in France to prevent the spread of covid-19. A curfew is applied from 8 pm to 6 am nationwide and was not suspended at the end of the year.

Reports indicate that the party took place in an empty shed belonging to a storage company.

Prosecutors launched an investigation into the illegal organization of the meeting and the violence against the authorities.

Many vehicles and revelers remained at the scene on Friday and the music was still loud, an AFP journalist confirmed.

In the southern city of Marseille, security forces disrupted an illegal celebration that brought together about 300 people, police said. More than 150 people were warned and the three suspected organizers were arrested.

Gerald Darmanin, the interior minister, said 132,000 police officers were dispatched to France on New Year’s Eve to ensure safety and respect for the curfew.
