The mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas (PSDB), said that it sanctioned a 46% increase in its own salary in order not to make the ceiling of civil servants obsolete and, thus, lose servers. The statement was made on Monday (28), in an interview with GloboNews.

“During this 8-year period, inflation ranged from 60 to 100%, depending on the amount considered. The minimum wage increased 68% in this period. The value of teachers’ salaries in the municipal network increased by 80%. So today the roof is out of date. It is a ceiling of R $ 24 thousand ”, said the mayor.
On Thursday (24), Covas signed Bill 173/18, which establishes a salary increase of 46%, from R $ 24.1 thousand to R $ 35.4 thousand. The sanction of the project also guarantees a salary increase for the vice mayor, from R $ 21.7 thousand to R $ 31.9 thousand, and the municipal secretaries, from R $ 19.3 thousand and R $ 30.1 thousand.
The law comes into force on January 1, 2022, after winning, on December 31, 2021, the prohibition of readjustments of public officials imposed by the rescue plan to states and municipalities in the midst of the 19-covid pandemic. In accordance with the law, expenses will be paid from your own budget, supplemented if necessary.
As it is the ceiling for public officials, the mayor’s new salary may have a domino effect on the municipality’s accounts, since now the remuneration of other public officials can be adjusted up to R $ 35.4 thousand.
The law authorizing the salary increase for the São Paulo municipal executive was approved by the Chamber with a score of 34 in favor, 17 against, and one abstention.
