ROME, DECEMBER 26 (ANSA) – The pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of London (UCLH) are developing a drug to prevent the symptoms of Covid-19, an article in the newspaper “The Guardian” showed on Friday (25).

The drug, called AZD7448, could prevent a person from developing the disease for six to 12 months after it was ingested. The company has already applied for registration for testing in the United States.

Like other drugs approved in the US, but used in patients who have already contracted the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, the drug uses a combination of antibodies. The estimate is that, with the approval of the tests, it will be available between March and April.

The immediate protection promised by the pharmaceutical company could play a key role in reducing the impact of the pandemic while vaccination is ongoing.

“The advantage of this drug is that it gives you antibodies right away. We will be able to tell the test participants who were exposed: “Yes, they can get vaccinated. But we cannot guarantee that it will protect them from the disease because it is too late: current vaccines do not confer immunity before a month, “university virologist Catherine Houlihan told the newspaper.
