Communication failures regarding Coronavac’s efficacy data began in the São Paulo government, days before the press conference, which generated frustration among scientists, journalists, and the population. Although the expectation of Governor João Doria (PSDB) was highly effective, researchers from the Butantan Institute and technical officials from the São Paulo government already expected that the rate could be below others already announced, such as that of the US immunizer Pfizer, 95% efficiency.
The scientists relied on technical issues. Few immunizers are 90% effective; influenza, for example, which has been around for more than a decade, has an average yield of 40% to 70%. In addition, vaccines that use inactivated viruses, such as Coronavac, do not usually elicit such a strong immune response, although they have fewer adverse events and are safer.
Even with the cautious tone of the researchers, who only received the final data from the analysis carried out by an independent committee of experts the day before the conference, members of João Doria’s top management leaked to the press two days before the conference. , that the effectiveness was greater than 90%.
The information was denied by Butantan and, behind the scenes, caused a riot among the institute’s researchers, who privately mocked that the author of the leak could only have access to this data if he were psychic.
Governor João Doria’s absence from Wednesday’s press conference was a way of avoiding eventual wear. He also did not participate in recent press conferences announcing the tightening of the quarantine. On the other hand, he was present at press conferences to announce the start of Coronavac production and at the reception of the shipment of doses at Guarulhos airport.
The result of the minimum efficacy rate being exceeded was a source of relief to the researchers, who understand that it may at least have some level of protection against COVID-19 and can obtain registration from regulatory bodies. In the political wing of the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, however, the feeling was one of frustration at the expectation that an extraordinary result would give even more strength to the vaccine against the disputes with President Jair Bolsonaro.
