The city of São Paulo decided to cancel New Year’s Eve 2021, which would take place virtually, due to the worsening of the covid-19 pandemic and the reclassification of the municipality to the yellow phase of the São Paulo Plan.
In a statement, the city explained that, with the cancellation, it hopes to reinforce the importance of maintaining social distance, wearing a mask and washing hands during the holidays, although it says it has taken all precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. the artists and professionals involved in New Years Eve.
The funds initially destined to the hiring of artists will be used for a joint action between the municipal departments of Culture and Tourism, with a focus on activities to raise public awareness of the coronavirus.
“The Municipal Tourism Secretariat will promote other forms of tourism promotion in the city of São Paulo that are safe and in accordance with the new health guidelines of the covid-19 pandemic,” he announced.
In absolute numbers, São Paulo is the city most affected by covid-19 in the state, with 377,507 confirmed cases and 15,175 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest data published by the state government.
The yellow phase of the São Paulo Plan, where the capital is located, imposes restrictions on the opening hours of shops and services, in addition to occupation and service capacity. Restaurants must stop selling alcoholic beverages at 8 pm and close at 10 pm at the latest; the bars close earlier at 8pm.
All establishments can only operate with up to 40% of their maximum capacity, with tables for up to six people and complying with the protocols determined by health surveillance, such as temperature measurement, availability of alcohol gel and a minimum distance of 1 , 5 meters between the tables.
