The Butantan Institute said it sent a proposal today to the Ministry of Health to supply doses of the CoronaVac vaccine, produced in partnership with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac, starting in January 2021, to the PNI (National Immunization Program).
President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) had given the order to cancel the intention to buy 46 million doses of the immunizer produced in association with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac. However, the federal government maintained the agreement with the São Paulo state government.
The Ministry of Health explains that the process for acquiring the immunizing agent can only continue with the approval and registration of the immunobiological product in Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency). Butantan confirms the position of the federal executive’s portfolio and reiterates that it will supply the doses shortly after the definition.
CoronaVac production will continue even without federal agency approval for its effectiveness, according to the institute. On December 23, the results of the third and final phase of the immunizer test will be presented.
