Jair Bolsonaro can be accused of anything but inconsistency. The president is as bad today as he was two years ago, when he took office. While other heads of state rush to immunize the inhabitants of their countries against Covid-19, the Brazilian president struggles to block the application of vaccines that his government is not prepared to offer.
It is impossible to listen to Bolsonaro’s conversations with his devotees in the Alvorada lobby without stumbling upon an oddity. Bolsonaro’s penultimate is the idea of forcing Brazilians who want to be vaccinated to sign a liability waiver, exempting themselves from guilt for possible side effects.
“There are people who want to take it, so take it, “Bolsonaro told his subjects.. If you have a problem there … “Anvisa, the National Health Surveillance Agency, exists to guarantee the quality of the drugs released by its technicians, including immunizers.
The person signing the term of responsibility is a guinea pig in the testing phase. The ladybugs who will go to the health clinic to get rid of the virus hope to receive in return the money they invest in safe and effective Anvisa vaccines.
Bolsonaro knows that his idea, absurdly, will not succeed. If it is approved in Congress, it will fall to the Federal Supreme Court. But the president has a way sui generis preside. Imagine that the best way out of a crisis, the lack of immunizers, is to create another crisis: the disqualification of vaccines.
Bolsonaro remains consistent. In August he defended the freedom not to get vaccinated. In October, he said that mandatory vaccination was only for Faísca, a dog from the Bolsonaro family. In November, he celebrated as a personal victory the death of a volunteer from the tests carried out by Butantan. It was a suicide. Nothing to do with the vaccine.
Now the president is pretending that the vaccine problem is not his. It takes time to realize that this attitude is the main problem. Without vaccines, Bolsonaro tends to become his own side effect.
