British writer John the square, famous for his books on espionage, died on Saturday (12), at the age of 89, in Cornwall, England. The death was confirmed by his agent Jonny Geller, who ruled out the possibility of Covid-19.
According to the Penguin publishing house, responsible for the author’s releases in the United Kingdom, the cause of death was pneumonia.
John le Carré was born David John Moore Cornwell, on October 19, 1931, in Poole, England. Between the 1950s and 1960s, he worked as a secret agent in the British Army and later for the British Security Service, MI5, spying on left-wing groups to uncover potential Soviet agents in the midst of the Cold War.
Le Carré used his knowledge as a spy to develop most of his literary work, based on espionage stories.
His first book, “The Dead on the Phone”, was released in 1961. In addition to him, several other works became a worldwide bestseller and won film adaptations, such as “O Espião que Saiu do Frio” (1963), “The spy who knew too much” (1974) and “O Jardineiro Fiel” (2001), among others.
The latter was adapted for the big screen by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles, a film that won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Weisz, who shares the screen with Ralph Fiennes.
With a literary career of almost 60 years, Le Carré leaves a work with 25 novels and a memoir, “El tunnel de las palomas” (2016). He leaves behind his wife, Jane Eustace, to whom he has been married for almost 50 years, and four children, Nicholas, Timothy, Stephen and Simon.
