The candidate for mayor of Goiânia, Maguito Vilela (MDB), has shown a “slow and progressive” improvement in the inflammation of the lungs, caused by Covid-19. Fighting for a month against the disease, he is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a São Paulo hospital, intubated and sedated.

According to the medical bulletin released by the Albert Einstein Hospital on Friday (20), Maguito remains connected to a device called ECMO, which works as an artificial heart and lungs, as a way to help oxygenation of the blood. His state of health is considered stable.

Vilela was the most voted candidate in the first round of the Goiânia elections and will run for the second round with Vanderlan Cardoso (PSD) on November 29. The politician received 217,194 votes, which represents 36.02% of the valid votes.

The candidate’s campaign team also denied on Thursday (19) the information that the politician died of Covid-19.

Treatment against Covid-19

The politician tested positive for coronavirus on October 20. Two days later, he was admitted to a hospital in Goiânia.

On October 27, he was diagnosed with up to 75% inflammation in the lungs and an alert for the critical level of oxygen saturation in the blood. That same day he was transferred to São Paulo.

On October 30, Maguito was intubated for the first time after his respiratory condition worsened. On November 8, he resumed breathing without the equipment. The politician got worse and was intubated for the second time, last Sunday (15), the day of the voting.

Two days later, the candidate began respiratory treatment with a machine called ECMO, which works like the lungs and the heart artificially.

In August of this year, Maguito lost two sisters to Covid-19 in less than ten days. They were 82 and 76 years old and lived in Jataí, the politician’s hometown located in the southwest of Goiás.
