The Regional Electoral Tribunal of Bahia (TRE-BA) changed the voting places in at least 13 electoral zones that exist today in Salvador. Based on a survey conducted by CORREIO based on data provided by the Court’s Elections Guide, the change modified at least 216 polling stations in the Bahian capital. As each section has an average of 400 voters, this means that around 86.4 thousand Salvadoran voters will have a different place to press the confirm button, tomorrow (15), in the 2020 municipal elections. In total, Salvador has 19 electoral zones, 4,235 polling stations and 464 polling stations. There were only no changes to the polling place in zones 6, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17.

The main reason for the change of address was the closure of the colleges and schools where the voting was held, in addition to the fact that many of them are under renovation at this time. “Unfortunately, some schools that were polling stations closed, others were unable to receive sections or were renovated and the renovation was not completed on time. This led to the need to change the sections ”, explained the Section Chief to the Electoral Planning and Logistics Coordination (COELE) of TRE-BA, Glória Tourinho.

In addition to the new places to vote, the sections were also relocated due to the pandemic, as determined by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), in October this year. The equalization of the number of voters by section aims to optimize the use of the ballot boxes and standardize the number of voters, in order to adapt to health protocols. “Some sections were relocated to have the least concentration of people possible,” explained TRE-BA president, Jatahy Júnior.

Some examples of polling places that no longer exist are the Colégio Estadual Odorico Tavares, in the Vitória corridor. It closed in December 2019 and will be auctioned by the state government. Therefore, the voters who voted there were transferred to buildings of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), distributed between the Rector Heonir Rocha Class Pavilion, also known as the Cinnamon Class Pavilion (PAC), and in the buildings of the faculties of Education. , Law and Administration.

Another change occurred with the closure of one of the headquarters of the Brazilian and United States Cultural Association (ACBEU), also in Vitória. Voters now have the UFBA School of Nutrition as their polling place. Those who voted for the Ruy Barbosa College in Rio Vermelho, will also have to change their route. As the educational institution left the building and is now on the Costa Azul (in addition to the Parallel unit), voters were redistributed and will vote for Unifacs, Colégio Manoel Devoto and the Catholic University of Salvador (UCSAL). The psychologist Mariana Pita Lima, 36, voted for the Anchietinha Institute, in Itaigara. Like her, all those who voted there were transferred to the Faculdade Batista Brasileira (FBB), next to the Hotel Fiesta. She confesses that she would not have known that the polling place had changed had it not been for the alert from a friend and her mother. From there, he made the query on the TRE-BA website. “I looked out of curiosity, because I didn’t even think it had changed. I was going to end up at the other school, ”says Mariana.

TRE-BA did not communicate individually to voters about the change, but did so through the media, on the agency’s official website, and on social media. A sign will be placed in front of the old polling stations that have ceased to exist – such as in Odorico Tavares, ACBEU, Anchietinha and Faculdade Ruy Barbosa – informing citizens where to vote. In the case of changes referred to the polling stations, the people summoned by TRE-BA will provide guidance, according to Glória Tourinho.

How to know your polling place
To find out if your voting location or section remains the same, there are a few ways to check. TRE-BA’s recommendation is to use the E-Title application, available on iOS and Android, because the information is more up-to-date. Through it, it is possible to obtain both the digital means of voter registration, as well as their electoral situation and voting place. Another way is to consult the TSE website (https://www.tse.jus.br/). Those without Internet access can call (71) 3373-7000, which will be available to give instructions at the time of voting, from 7 am to 5 pm. If the person does not know the CPF or title number by heart, they can provide their full name, mother’s name, and date of birth.

Retired Djanira Barreto, 60, checked the polling place using the app, with the help of her daughter, and will continue to vote at the UFBA Polytechnic School. However, your polling place has changed and you will probably stop voting on the third floor. “If I had moved to another place, there would be no [votar]. But the section has changed. I’m praying for you to come down, because it was on the third floor of the Polytechnic, think of a staircase! ”Djanira said. He still does not know if he will vote in these elections. “Politicians are leaving a lot to be desired,” he says.
