The vice president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Edson Fachin, participated this Saturday (14) in the ceremony that attests that the system used to compute the result of the municipal elections is the same one signed and sealed on Friday (6) . since last week.

Fachin said the system was reviewed and deemed “healthy and fit” for votes.

Voters from all 26 states will elect mayors and councilors this Sunday (15). The practice at the TSE is to carry out the final verification on the eve of the elections.

The verification of the digital signature of the system is organized by the Information Technology Secretariat of the TSE. In addition to Fachin, representatives of the Public Ministry, the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), the Federal Police and political parties participated in the event.

The verification ceremony of the electoral systems is foreseen in the electoral legislation. The programs that count the votes at the polls and that total the result are verified.

At the event, the secretariat technicians demonstrated that the programs are sealed and stored in the vault room of the TSE. They then went on to verify the electronic signatures. The step by step of each step was projected on a screen.

After verification, in a press interview, Fachin said that an election in the middle of a pandemic, such as that of Covid-19, is unprecedented. He thanked the volunteers who helped organize the elections.

“We find ourselves, even in the pandemic, with a country that is in mourning, we achieved the support of businessmen and companies that were willing to bring health security to the pollsters,” he said.

Fachin asked voters to go to the polls with masks and respect social distance. “There is health security for the exercise of the right to vote,” he said.

According to Fachin, at most five hours after the polls close, the TSE must have added the votes.

This year, the totalization of votes will be concentrated in the TSE, no longer in the regional courts, as in previous claims.

“The system is solid and has built trust since its inception. There is no concrete demonstration that there has been a deviation,” said the TSE vice president. “No country remains a democratic state if its institutions are diluted. The reality is proven in another sense,” he added.

Fachin also said that the TSE has been working to combat false information, known as fake news. “No one has the right to destroy freedom by spreading false news,” he added.
