A team from NSC TV, a subsidiary of Rede Globo in Santa Catarina, was attacked by popular people on Monday morning (2), on a beach in Florianópolis. The information is from the G1 portal.

The team reported on the inspections on the beach during the Fiesta de los Muertos, when a group advanced on reporter Bárbara Barbosa and film reporter Renato Solder, trying to prevent them from making the story.

The two were surrounded by people who were on the sand strip in front of a lifeguard post in Praia do Campeche, in breach of a municipal decree that prohibits stay in this area, due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Some people threatened to break the camera, others tried to take away the cell phone that he used to record the assault at the hands of the reporter. After the confusion, Barbara managed to retrieve the device, but ended up suffering scratches and assault marks on her arm.

According to the report, the Military Police and the Municipal Guard were summoned and the station will record a police report.

In a note, the National Association of Newspapers (ANJ) repudiated the attacks suffered by professionals:

“It was a cowardly, authoritarian, intolerant attitude that shows a lack of understanding of the role of journalists in society.

“In addition to the verbal and physical attacks, which are reprehensible in any situation, what happened was also an attempt to prevent the truth from reaching the public. Therefore, it is an attack on the right of people to be freely informed. ANJ hopes that the aggressors will be identified and referred to justice, so that they may be punished in accordance with the law, ”the note says.

The Catarinense Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (Acaert) also referred to the fact.

“Any type of intimidation or shame to the work of the informant teams in their mission of informing the population is an attack on press freedom, especially at this time of a pandemic. In this way, we ask the authorities to identify and punish those responsible for the attack, highlighting that any attempt to attack the media is also a crime against democracy.

The Catarinense Press Association, which also spoke out in solidarity with professionals, also expressed its concern about the growing wave of violence against journalists and journalism.

“Trying to silence the press is an irresponsible and dangerous attitude of people who flirt with authoritarianism without even understanding the historical implications of such an attitude. It is expected that the aggressors will be duly identified and punished in an exemplary manner, in accordance with the law, ”he says in a note.

NSC TV also officially commented on the case:

“The attack and aggression against the NSC team, this Monday in Praia do Campeche, are an attempt to impede the work of the press, to make the facts known to the public – which is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. Attitudes like this, which we unfortunately show at the Jornal do Lunch, are being repeated throughout the country. But they reveal and reinforce the importance of our work. Aggressors will be held accountable for their actions. And we will continue doing what we do: professional, independent and essential journalism for the society of Santa Catarina ”.
