Walmart announces return of guns and ammunition to shelves the day after picking them up – AFP
The American hypermarkets Walmart decided to put the firearms and ammunition back on the shelves on Friday (30), a day after removing them due to the violent protests in Philadelphia and only days before a tense presidential election.
Demonstrations that followed the death of a black man by police sparked riots in this Pennsylvania city, United States, on Wednesday, leading to multiple arrests.
Earlier this week, the local press published videos of stores looted in the north of the city, including a Walmart.
As it had already done this summer, during protests over the death of George Floyd, an African American killed by a white policeman, the chain again decided to keep the guns and ammunition it sells in about half of its units.
However, “as the incidents were geographically isolated, we decided to put the products back on the shelves,” explained the retail giant in a message sent to AFP.
Both decisions, to remove the weapons from the public’s reach and to return them, are made just days before Tuesday’s presidential election.
On several occasions, Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term, has avoided saying whether he will give up power in the event of defeat. He alluded to a possible fraud by mail vote, widely used this year by the pandemic.
Many buildings in central Washington began shielding doors and windows with plywood on Wednesday to guard against possible demonstrations after Election Day.
