Broken since 2018, Lula and Ciro Gomes are in São Paulo and agree to a truce

SÃO PAULO – Broken since the 2018 elections, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and former Minister Ciro Gomes (PDT) sealed the peace in a conversation. The gesture could signify the beginning of a rapprochement between the left-wing parties with their sights set on the presidential dispute of 2022, even though the issue was not addressed at the meeting.

The armistice was negotiated by the governor of Ceará, Camilo Santana, affiliated with the PT, but an ally of the Ferreira Gomes brothers in his state. The negotiations to make the conversation viable lasted more than a month.

The meeting, in early September, took place at the Lula Institute headquarters in São Paulo, and lasted a whole afternoon. Ciro spoke of his regrets with the PT, while Lula recalled the former minister’s attacks on the party.

The central topic of the conversation, however, was the government of President Jair Bolsonaro and the country’s situation in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Diagnostics were also presented on the reasons for the electoral result.

Since the meeting, Ciro and Lula changed their tone when referring to each other and the attacks and punctures stopped. The two had a close relationship, mainly in the former government of the former president, when the current pediatrician was Minister of National Integration. The former president used to exalt the loyal attitude of the former subordinate during the crisis of the monthly allowance in 2005, the first great attrition of the PT era.

Over the years, they kept in touch, despite a few occasional attacks. The climate between them, however, deteriorated with the 2018 election. Lula was the PT candidate, he was even registered in the Electoral Tribunal, but he was prevented from running for the sentence in Lava-Jato in the case of the triplex of Guarujá. .

The members of the PT even offered Ciro the possibility of being Lula’s substitute for after the rejection occurred, in this way, the pediatrician would assume the head of the ticket. Ciro called the offer, among other terms, “aberration” and “cardboard” and said he would not accept being a “vice.”

In the same campaign, the former presidential candidate of the PDT was also irritated by the maneuver carried out by the PT to remove the candidacy of Marília Arraes to the government of Pernambuco, in favor of supporting the reelection of Paulo Câmara. Under this agreement, the PSB resigned to close an alliance with Ciro in the presidential elections. The then candidate called the maneuver a “coup d’etat.”

In return, when Fernando Haddad went to the second round against Bolsonaro, Ciro, instead of launching the PT campaign, as expected, traveled to Europe. Since then, his references to the PT began to rise. In February 2019, during the UNE Congress in Salvador, the pediatrician told a supporter of the former president that he was provoking it:

– Lula is in custody, asshole.

Municipal alliances

He repeated the phrase pronounced by his brother Cid Gomes three times during the second round of the elections. “Picos del bandido lulopetismo” was also an expression that began to accompany Ciro in interviews. He also declared that he had lost respect for the former president and called him a “professional deceiver.”

Lula lowered his tone when answering, but said in May that the former minister chose to seek the vote of “whoever hates the PT, go with God.”

In September, after the conversation, Lula placed the pediatrician on the list of qualified names to run for president. He also described the differences between them as “specific” and said he had respect for Ciro. Since the meeting, the former PDT presidential candidate, on the other hand, has not made strong accusations against the former president and the PT.

In an interview with TV Cultura on Monday, former PT marketer João Santana even said that a ticket with candidate Ciro and Lula as vice president would be unbeatable. Due to the suspension of the political rights of the PT, the hypothesis is not viable. Lula’s allies also rule out his accepting to be a vice.

However, it is not ruled out that PT and PDT are closer at the national level. In the current municipal elections, the PT supports 173 mayoral candidates from the PDT, which in turn is on plaques headed by 134 members of the PT. These alliances, however, do not occur in any of the capitals.
