Employees and patients present at the Bonsucesso Federal Hospital, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, experienced moments of tension and chaos during the evacuation of people after a fire in building 1 of the complex this morning. The hospital’s care coordinator, Carlos César Assef, confirmed the death of a 42-year-old woman, who was in very serious condition, during the transfer.

The management of the Federal Hospital of Bonsucesso reported that the unit’s fire department took 162 patients from building 1 to building 2 until the arrival of the fire department. Subsequently, 25 patients were transferred to seven different health units, eight of which have covid-19. [quatro foram para o Hospital de Acari, e a outra metade para o CER (Coordenação de Emergência Regional) do Leblon], according to the Fire Department.

Still according to the corporation, four patients were transferred to the Campaña RioCentro Hospital, in the western area, which had been closed and was reopened this morning to help the rescue.

The fire department’s spokesman, Lt. Col. Lauro Botto, said the fire was still in Building 1, but the situation was under control. “So far, the fire remains exclusively in building 1, we have not spread to other buildings. Both the structure and the functioning of the other units of the hospital are functioning normally. At first the situation is under control, but we are withdrawing oxygen cylinders, because there is always the risk of explosion, “he said.

The Fire Department also works with the risk of collapse in building 1. Civil Defense technicians are on site to assess the structure of the unit affected by the fire.

Fast rescue

According to the nursing technician Tassiana Freitas, the situation was critical during the evacuation.

“There are many critically ill and critically ill patients who are being cared for now in the hospital parking lot. There is no place to turn on the monitors,” he said.

“There are patients who do not know where they are, they are lost and we are looking for them, because we all left together. We had no resources. There is no one else in Building 1, we are emptying others,” he said.

Following the transfer of people, the unit’s employees attempted to remove medicines and hospital supplies. Due to the large number of patients, some were taken to a workshop next to the hospital for further treatment. Gurneys and monitors were placed on site.

To transfer

Unknown cause

The fire hit the infirmary and X-ray equipment. Early reports indicate that the fire started shortly before 10 am and the first firefighters arrived approximately 10 minutes later.

The source of the fire is still unknown, and the Fire Department said it was only able to determine the motive after an investigation. Witnesses and Lt. Col. Lauro Botto, a spokesman for the Fire Department, said the problem was initially noticed in the warehouse, where there are many diapers stored, which would have contributed to the increase in the fire.

“The infirmary of building 1, where the fire originated, was half full, that is, there were 200 patients in the place. They were transferred to other buildings in the hospital. The fire, as far as we know, originated underground, where there is a diaper stock, but this must be properly assessed by experts, ”said Botto.
