A cyclone with subtropical characteristics is expected to change weather conditions in various parts of the country, causing heavy rains and gusts of wind. Due to the phenomenon, the Brazilian Navy issued today (26) storm danger alerts for the three southern states and for Mato Grosso do Sul. For Bahia and Minas Gerais, the warning is for the danger of heavy rain.

According to the National Meteorological Institute (Inmet), in the last hours of this Sunday (25), the cyclone gained strength, being classified as a Mani Subtropical Storm. In the municipality of Marilândia, a rainfall of 169.8 mm (mm) was registered between the morning of the last Saturday (24) and yesterday morning, a value well above the monthly average, which is 96.7 mm. In Vitória, the total was 80.2 mm.

“According to the Civil Defense of Espírito Santo, there were some landslides. The rocks rolled down the slopes and according to the agency more than 400 people were left homeless, ”Inmet reported, in a note, emphasizing that the occasionally heavy rain alert is valid to this day, especially for the north-central part of the state.

Although the effects are felt more immediately in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and some areas of Rio de Janeiro, until the early hours of Monday there is the possibility of arriving later to other places. In Mato Grosso do Sul, the behavior should be repeated during the afternoon, according to the Navy. For Bahia, the hazard notification is effective until 10 am on Tuesday.

For all states, rainfall of 30 to 60 mm per hour can occur, combined with intense winds, of 60 to 100 kilometers per hour, so the population must be aware of the risks of electrical blackouts, falling trees and flooding. There is also a forecast for hail.

In a note released on Sunday, the Navy stressed that the winds caused by the cyclone could cause waves in the open sea, with heights of up to 4.5 meters, until Tuesday morning (27). “There are also favorable conditions for the occurrence of surf, with waves that run from south to southeast, up to 2.5 meters high, along the coastal strip between the states of Rio de Janeiro, north of Arraial do Cabo and Espírito Santo, south of Regência, until the early morning of 27 ”, he amended.

Inmet also mentions that the cyclone will move away from the mainland in the next few days. The assessment is that it is heading east.
