Former doctor Roger Abdelmassih was attacked yesterday by a detainee at the Hospital Center of the Penitentiary System, in Carandiru, in the North Zone of São Paulo. Sentenced to more than 173 years in prison for raping patients, he has been in the unit since September.
The information was released today by TV Globo and confirmed at Twitter by SAP (Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration).
According to SAP, the attack occurred yesterday afternoon. A detainee who was in the same wing as Abdelmassih and who recently raped a sister, as soon as he learned that she was in the same place as the former doctor, broke into the room and attacked him.
The assault was contained by hospital officials. In a statement, the secretariat stated that Abelmassih was not injured and that the other prisoner was transferred from the ward and later released.
Check, in its entirety, the note sent by SAP:
The Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration reports that yesterday afternoon, 21, inmate Roger Abdelmassih suffered an attempted assault by another prisoner. Both are interned in the Hospital Center of the Penitentiary System, in the personal security wing, and the perpetrator would have a relative who was a victim of sexual violence, which motivated the attack.
The situation was quickly contained and Abdelmassih was not injured. He underwent a medical examination and is in good health. A police report was registered on the event. The other prisoner was transferred to another wing of the hospital and was released today. “
Abdelmassih comes and goes
At the beginning of September, Abdelmassih was transferred from Penitentiary II of Tremembé, in the interior of São Paulo, to the hospital located in the capital. The change was granted by the Minister of the Supreme Court (Federal Supreme Court) Ricardo Lewandowski on the grounds that the 76-year-old ex-doctor suffers from pulmonary hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
In April, Abdelmassih received the right to serve his sentence under house arrest for being considered a risk group by covid-19. However, in late August, the São Paulo Court of Justice reversed the decision; According to the judge who evaluated the case, at the request of the Public Ministry, the former doctor’s health problems could be treated within the penitentiary system.
