The mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas (PSDB), announced today the resumption of regular classes in the city only for secondary school, which can return from November 3. Infant and primary education will have to wait for a new authorization from the City Council.

The refund goes to municipal, state and private schools in the capital. The return is voluntary for parents and students.

The announcement was made together with the dissemination of the results of a serological census carried out with students and teachers of the municipal school system. The survey showed that 13.2% of students, teachers and professionals linked to education have already been infected by the new coronavirus.

In a virtual press conference, the municipal secretary of Health, Edson Aparecido, affirmed that the results of the serological surveys carried out by the City Council show a high rate of asymptomatic patients (70%), a low rate of contamination among teachers (7% ) and “Expressive” number of students living with the elderly (25%), data that, according to him, are based on the recommendation to only maintain extracurricular activities for children up to 14 years of age.

“In reality, the age group over 14 to 19 years old is already a population that is circulating in the city, mainly because part of it works,” said the secretary. In his assessment, the return of secondary school students to classrooms “would not have an impact on transmissibility. [do coronavírus] in the town “.

Reception and diagnostic evaluation

With the authorization of the City Council, classroom activities can be resumed in the baccalaureate provided that biosafety protocols and the distance between students and teachers are respected. There should also be an occupancy limit on classrooms.

According to Covas, the first steps to take when these students return to schools will be to receive and carry out a diagnostic evaluation, “in order to be able to measure what was assimilated during this period and define, together with the networks, pedagogical reinforcement strategies.”

The mayor also said that only teachers who are already “immunized” will return to classrooms, according to the results of the serological census.

Since October 7, public and private schools in the city of São Paulo have been able to receive students in person, but only for extracurricular activities (such as dance, language or music classes, for example) and reception.

Adherence to this reopening was low in the municipal network. About 15 of the 4,000 schools in the network have hosted their students so far.

The next revaluation will be in November

The City Council announced that on November 19 it will make a new assessment of the possibility that more students and teachers will return. The date falls four days after the first round of municipal elections, scheduled for November 15. Covas is running for reelection in the capital.

“On November 19, based on the second phase of the serological census, and with the evolution of the pandemic in São Paulo, we will have a new press conference to announce what is happening and what is authorized in São Paulo in the area of education, as of December 1, “said the mayor of São Paulo.
