A France organizes on Wednesday (21) at the Sorbonne University a national tribute to Samuel Paty, teacher who was beheaded last Friday in an attack that shocked the country and led the government to crack down on radical Islam.

Among the seven people is the father of a student who began the mobilization against the teacher after a class on freedom of expression on October 5.

The tribute will take place in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron at the famous Parisian university, starting at 17:30 GMT (14:30 Brasilia time).

The State will deliver the Legion of Honor posthumously and Paty’s 5-year-old son will be declared a “student of the nation”, a distinction attributed to children whose parents died in wars or attacks.

Sixteen people were in provisional detention, including five students, to try to understand how the criminal found and identified the teacher before beheading him, near the school in Conflans-Saint-Honorine, in the Paris region.

At the center of the investigation are the messages exchanged by WhatsApp between the perpetrator of the crime and the student’s father who had released videos demanding popular revenge against the teacher.

He criticized the teacher for showing cartoons of Muhammad during a class on October 5.

A few days after the videos were posted, Samuel Paty was beheaded on the street by an 18-year-old Chechen refugee, who was later shot dead by police.

The murderer’s family is also being questioned by the police, as well as the Islamist militant Abdelhakim Sefrioui, who accompanied the student’s father in his mobilization on social media.

This Wednesday they will also appear at the hearing, as well as two minors, suspected of having received money from the murderer in exchange for information about the victim.
