SAO PAULO, OCTOBER 20 (ANSA) – Former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica (2010-2015) resigned as senator on Tuesday (20) and withdrew permanently from the country’s politics.
Mujica, who suffers from a chronic immune disease, anticipated his decision due to the new coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2) pandemic.
“The current situation forces me, with great regret for my political vocation, to request the resignation of my position granted by the citizens. The pandemic kicked me out, ”Mujica said during the session.
The 85-year-old former head of state has a long political career. During his youth, Mujica was part of the Tupamaros guerrilla, fighting against the military dictatorship in Uruguay, which earned him a 13-year prison sentence, and he was released only after the end of the regime.
In an interview with the newspaper “El País”, Mujica said that although he liked politics very much, he chose to leave it to take care of his health and live as long as possible. The former president has a condition called Strauss syndrome.
This is the second time that Mujica resigns as senator. In 2018, the Uruguayan resigned and spent about a year at home, until he was elected again in the 2019 elections.
As president, Mujica was known for his posture and simple life, as well as having a more progressive government, with the decriminalization of abortion and the legalization of same-sex marriage. (ANSA).
