The Governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB) declared on Friday 16 that vaccination against COVID-19 in the State it will be mandatory. The statement contradicts previous statements by the federal government that it would not force Brazilians to get vaccinated. Hours later, the president Jair bolsonaro published on social media that the Ministry of Health will not impose immunizations.
“I have already guaranteed that here the 45 million Brazilians in São Paulo will be vaccinated and vaccination will be mandatory, unless the citizen has medical advice and a medical certificate that cannot be vaccinated. And we will take legal action if there are setbacks in this regard, ”Doria said.
He also indicated that it does not make sense to vaccinate only a part of the population. “It is not possible to imagine – and I learned it from the doctors, we have three here by our side – in a pandemic, vaccinating some and not vaccinating others. As long as we have people who are not vaccinated on a large scale, we will continue to have the presence of the virus, contamination and death, “continued Doria, at a press conference, answering a question about a date to decide if the vaccine will be included in the calendar national vaccination.
Hours later, Bolsonaro reacted. On social media, he posted excerpts of laws on immunization of the population. As part of a 1975 law cited by the president, “state governments, WITH PRIOR HEARING of the Ministry of Health, MAY propose complementary legislative measures aimed at compliance with vaccines, which are mandatory for the population, within their territories.”
The president also ruled out the possibility of requiring vaccination. “The Ministry of Health will offer vaccination, safely, without accommodation, at the appropriate time, after scientific testing and validated by ANVISA, however, without imposing or making vaccination mandatory,” he wrote.
“The final date for the decision is the 21st. No more information is missing, there is no more data, there are no more elements for the Ministry (of Health) to decide and Anvisa to make its decision, given the results of the third and last Coronavac vaccine trial phase ”, he added.
The governor stated that he will respect the period required by Anvisa, of 60 days, to publicize the authorization. “We trust Anvisa, its exemption, its technical capacity, as it has been until now, and we are sure that this will not change.” Doria hopes that the immunizer will be shared with all other Brazilian states.
