São Paulo Governor João Doria (PSDB) said today that President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) “politicized” the vaccine against covid-19. The statement came a day after the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, presented a vaccination schedule against the disease caused by the new coronavirus and ignored CoronaVac, an immunizer that is developed and tested by the Butantan Institute in partnership with the laboratory. Chinese Sinovac.
“I do not politicize the virus or the vaccine. Unfortunately, it was President Bolsonaro who politicized, who put ideology and political vision,” Doria said in an interview with CNN radio. “The only thing we do not want is to politicize the vaccine and postpone (its) application,” the governor added at another time.
The idea of the São Paulo government, which controls Butantan, is for the Ministry of Health to be responsible for the distribution of CoronaVac in other states of the country. The São Paulo vaccine is in the last phase of effectiveness testing, which will end in the next few days.
“Next week we will present all the results of the CoronaVac vaccine with doctors and nurses from these seven Brazilian states,” Doria anticipated, recalling the phase 3 studies that are being carried out with health professionals in São Paulo and six other states.
“The vaccine cannot have a politicized, partisan vision, or place it in an electoral context by anyone, the federal government, the Ministry of Health and Anvisa itself (National Health Surveillance Agency, which will be in charge of registering vaccines against a covid-19) “, reinforced the governor of São Paulo.
Decisive meeting
Doria again cited today a meeting scheduled for next Wednesday (21) as fundamental for the decision of whether the Ministry of Health will distribute CoronaVac or not, as it already does with other vaccines produced by Butantan, such as flu immunizers.
The governor affirmed that he will be present at the Brasilia meeting “to definitively propose to the minister and obtain from him, I hope, a positive word that the Ministry of Health will distribute the CoronaVac vaccine to other Brazilian states.”
In addition to Health, Doria also said that he will speak personally with Antônio Barra, director of Anvisa, so that the registration of the Butantan vaccine does not delay the initial planning of the São Paulo government, which will begin to vaccinate health professionals on 15 December.
“I want to look Admiral Antônio Barra in the eye and have the conviction and certainty that the conduct of the Agency will be republican and scientific,” said Doria.
