In one weekend, the number went from 0.94 to 1.02; for the city council, the scenario continues to be one of stability in the number of cases

The average number of Covid-19 transmissions per infected person (Rt) in Belo Horizonte had been under control since September 24. But, on Monday (5), it crossed the threshold of alertness again and reached 1.02. This means that each person infected with the coronavirus can transmit the disease to more than one person. The capital of Minas Gerais closed the last week with a rate of 0.94, on Friday (2).

“This indicates an interruption in the fall of cases, but there is still stability in the numbers. The increase of Rt to values that oscillate around 1 is the result of a greater exposure of people, with the reduction of social isolation. Maintaining values close to or below 1 depends on strict compliance with the protocols established by the Belo Horizonte City Council (PBH), combined with individual care, such as the use of masks, frequent hand hygiene and, whenever possible, distance social ”, he elaborated. the city hall of the capital, by note.

According to the municipal government, the concern will be greater if the indicator remains above 1 or 1.2 for a long time, a value that she considers critical. This scenario could cause an increase in serious cases and pressure on the health infrastructure. The infectologist Estêvão Urbano, a member of the Covid-19 confrontation committee, points out that keeping Rt above 1 for a week to ten days is the most worrying.

“If it continues to rise, hospital occupancy increases and there may be even more deaths and setbacks in the city’s easing system. The pandemic is not over. Sometimes people don’t understand this and think that everything is fine. good, “he says.

For now, the RT rate is the only one of the three indications of the pandemic analyzed by the Municipality of Belo Horizonte (PBH) that has passed the yellow alert level. But the occupancy of ICU beds has also increased and is at 39.9% – last Friday it was 35.4%. The occupation of nursing beds decreased from 35.4% to 33.7%. Until they reach the alert level, the numbers should reach 50%.

On Friday, the COVID Esgotos Monitoring project bulletin, which counts samples of the virus in the city’s sewage network, also pointed to an increase in potentially infected people. In one week, patients may have gone from 60,000 to 220,000. The update corresponds to the period between September 21 and 25, and the authors of the research affirm that it is necessary to wait for the results of next Friday (9) to know if there is a trend of increasing patients in HB.

Officially, the municipality registers 43,304 confirmations of the disease and 1,288 deaths.
