According to a ministry note, the 199 cases of unsolicited packages originated in Asian countries.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported that so far it has confirmed 199 cases of unsolicited seed packages in 23 states and the Federal District. According to a note from the ministry, all the packages originated from Asian countries, such as China, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The states that received the packages were Acre, Alagoas, Amapá, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte, Rondônia, Roraima, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Sergipe and Tocantins.

The guidance of the Ministry is that people should not open unsolicited seed packages received by the Post. So far, it is not possible to point out the risks involved. In this way, the package should not be discarded in the garbage, to avoid the contact of the seeds with the soil and their germination. The seeds should not be planted either, as studies on the risks are not yet conclusive.

The material is being sent to the Federal Laboratory for Agricultural Defense (LFDA) in Goiânia, a reference on the subject, where analyzes will be carried out to verify possible risks to human health, Brazilian agricultural production or the environment.

“Whoever receives the packages must contact the Federal Superintendency of Agriculture of their state or the state agricultural defense agency to coordinate the delivery or collection of the material. The alert is valid to receive seeds that arrive from abroad to any country and not only from China, as has been disclosed, ”MAPA says in a note.
