Witzel was expected to defend himself in Wednesday’s vote (23), but made the defense by videoconference.

“I don’t mind being judged and judged because I have the conviction that I never committed an illegal act,” he said in a passionate speech.

In his speech, Wiztel also attacked the deputies, was moved when talking about the woman and showed that he was sure that the vote would be for the continuation of the process.

“This house is in the process of accepting, apparently, true, it is already unanimous, everyone has already spoken, so why am I going to try to defend myself here? I cannot defend myself when the judges have previously said that they will vote yes. My complaint. What sentence is this? Never, as a magistrate, have I previously stated my admissibility sentence in a complaint or in a sentence. Because several times at the end of the process I acquitted the accused, “he said.

The impeachment request was based on an alleged administrative irregularity and misuse of public money in health care amid the coronavirus pandemic, based on operations Placebo and Favorite.

Both actions investigated allegations of embezzlement of portfolio funds and resulted in Operation Tris in Idem, which removed Witzel from office on suspicion of corruption.

He is accused of receiving bribes from companies linked to the scheme through bogus contracts signed with the office of First Lady Helena Witzel. The outgoing governor, who denies the charges, would have received at least R $ 554,200.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) revealed the alleged scheme after investigating irregularities in contracts for field hospitals, respirators and medicines.

According to prosecutors, the governor has “active participation in the knowledge and domain of contracting with the investigated companies.” The exchange of emails would show suspicion.
