Hundreds of students, officials and professors of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) participated this Thursday afternoon in a protest against the appointment of the next rector of the institution, Professor Carlos Bulhões. The protest is motivated by the fact that it ranked last in the consultation with the academic community held in July, which placed it in third place on the triple list presented to the Presidency of the Republic, but still being nominated by Jair Bolsonaro, is understood by the protesters as an intervention in the university.

The event, marked by banners, speeches and slogans against the nomination, was attended by several academic directories, the Central Student Directory (DCE) and representations of student entities, servers and university professors, which are added in the “I defend UFRGS” movement. Scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in front of the Rectory, the event ended up being held in front of the Faculty of Education (FACED). The event occurred simultaneously with a press conference in which Bulhões said that he would accept the nomination and defended the legitimacy of the nomination.

The representative of the National Union of Students (UNE) in RS, Gabriela Silveira, says that the act of this Thursday is only the first action of the mobilization against the nomination of Bulhões. “Today’s event is a starting point for a series of other mobilizations that we will be doing. “He is not the elector dean, he was not elected by any category” He will not have a minute of peace at the university, “he said.

According to the student, the nomination was received with “indignation” by the academic community. “Bulhões is not the elected rector, he was not elected by any category. We suffered an intervention from the Bolsonaro government, which I think never set foot in our university at some point, he is a guy who does not defend education, who does not defend science, so it is a complete climate of indignation from the university, that ours opinion and our will were disrespected. The UFRGS, as a whole, was totally disrespectful ”.

Around 3 in the afternoon, the protesters left the central campus and began to walk along Av. Loureiro da Silva to the State School of Rio Grande do Sul, where a closing ceremony was held. “The school also had a lack of respect for its autonomy when the state government broke the lock on the school and removed the student’s record without any dialogue with the school community. We went to show this solidarity between the students of UFRGS and the school community of Rio Grande do Sul ”, says Vítor Martínez, director of Social Movements of the Union of State Students (UEE) and a law student at UFRGS.
