After new cases in Curitiba of orders with mysterious seeds from China, the Paraná Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapar), of the Paraná Secretary of State for Agriculture, issued an alert this Thursday (17). Adapar’s advice is that if someone receives a suspicious package that does not open the package, they do not throw the contents away, much less plant these china seeds.

The unusual cases caught the attention of the government of Santa Catarina and also other countries such as the United States, Canada and Portugal. The United States Department of Agriculture even opened an investigation to learn of the mysterious orders that reached thousands of Americans without being bought.

Tuesday (16), the Grandstand He reported that a nurse, residing in Curitiba, received a package from China with questionable content days ago and that the Secretary of State for the Environment of Santa Catarina issued an alert for the same reason. After the report was published on Wednesday (16), other cases appeared in Curitiba. Adapar sent the seeds to the Ministry of Agriculture for analysis.

According to Adepar’s plant health officer, Renato Rezende Young Blood, the possibility of these orders causing economic losses and damage from a phytosanitary point of view is enormous. “The resident’s suspicious package arrived at our lab today. They are really seeds, similar to the orelícola [hortaliças]. Now the material goes to the laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture ”, explains the manager of Adepar. The test result may take up to 15 days.

Although it is not yet known what these seeds are and if they pose any risk to our agriculture and the environment, the authorities reinforce care so that whoever receives the population does not handle this type of order without knowing the origin. At Parana, who receives a suspicious order from China you should contact a local regional agricultural health unit. In Curitiba, the unit’s phone number is (41) 3313-4109.

Import of seeds from China only with authorization

According to Brazilian law, the import or export of seedlings and seeds must be authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture. Any plant material from other countries, be it seedlings or seeds, must pass federal inspection. These orders can bring contamination along with the seeds, causing the introduction of new pests for Brazilian agriculture.
