Watch Ricardo’s wife’s interview

JC – Are you going to Barraca do Primo?

Ricardo’s wife – Yes. We live nearby and we usually go there. It is a simple and very familiar place. Ricardo was on duty Thursday and Friday. On Saturday he rested in the afternoon. My son wanted to eat crab. Ricardo called the bar and asked if he still had it because the owner takes a pot and sometimes it runs out. They said there were 10 crabs. We asked to separate and we left, late in the afternoon, me, my husband, my son and a friend of ours. The group that was with this senior arrived later. There were several men, they came talking loudly, drawing attention. They were even rude to one of the waiters.

JC – How did the confusion start?

Wife – I was eating a crab when the waiter brought a skewer that I ordered. I went to the sink to wash my hands. I realized that the older one was looking at me. It was a grace, but my husband did not listen. But Ricardo noticed that he was looking at me and looked at him. The older one asked what he was looking at. Ricardo said that I should explain why he was looking at me. It was then that the older one started cursing my husband. Ricardo replied. The older man drew his pistol and began firing. My husband pushed the chair and told my son to run. He responded by shooting. I also ran, people started screaming.

JC – Was your husband seriously injured?

Wife – The older one fired many shots. I didn’t see him, but they even said he reloaded the gun. One of the shots was aimed at Ricardo’s head, who put his hand and thus the bullet hit him in the wrist, leaving an open fracture. Ricardo fell and received another shot in the knee and a third in the pubic area. The men who were shot were at a table next to ours, smoking a cigar. I don’t think they had anything to do with the older one.

JC – Who helped Ricardo?

Wife – I, my son and our friend stayed on the corner, trying to protect ourselves and watching Ricardo. When he stumbled, in the middle of the street, I ran to get the car. I took him to the hospital. I don’t know how I had the strength to drive, just being a God gave me strength. Ricardo kept saying that he couldn’t breathe, he said he was going to die, that it’s over. Upon arriving at the hospital, I screamed for help and was soon taken to the operating room. One of the shots went through the bladder and intestines. He is in the ICU and is at risk of death.

JC – Did Ricardo always go out armed?

Wife – Usually yes. Because as he is a prison guard and works in a special group, transporting prisoners, he is usually armed. But we could never imagine such a tragedy would happen, we went to do a family show. My son wanted to learn how to eat crabs and Ricardo was teaching him. My husband just defended himself. The oldest who seems to have left the house to make a fuss. From the moment he arrived at the bar he was inconvenient and disrespectful.
