Mayor Geraldino Júnior (PSDB) announced, this Saturday morning (5), the removal of the sanitary barrier installed at the entrance to Ilha Comprida, off the coast of São Paulo. The decision was made after several complaints from residents and tourists, who since Friday (4) faced lines of more than an hour to enter the city.
Images obtained by G1 This Saturday they show that the line reached the bridge that marks the border with Iguape, a neighboring municipality. The situation, however, divided opinions on social networks. Some netizens questioned the fact that the barrier continues and complained about the gigantic lines. Others publicly declared their support for the measure, saying the mayor was taking care of the population.
A neighbor of Ilha Comprida, who preferred not to be identified, explains that temperature measurements and verification of the record were being carried out, which ended up causing the delay. According to her, the waiting time was increased when someone without registration tried to enter the city.
“The complaints of the people are unfounded. The mayor was the first to make the barrier, which was essential to control the spread of the coronavirus in the municipality. The barrier was a prevention and should continue until we have a vaccine against the disease.”

In a note, the Ilha Comprida City Council explains that, due to the reclassification of the Ribeira Valley to the yellow phase of the São Paulo Plan and the intense movement due to the prolonged Independence party, the barrier no longer achieved its objectives. Therefore, the barrier that had been installed since March 19 was removed around 11:30 am on Saturday.
Mayor Geraldino Júnior says that he has the support and adhesion of owners, merchants, hoteliers, visitors and the general population, to comply with safety protocols and preventive regulations, such as the use of masks in all public places and services, distance social and healthcare hygiene.
In this conscious resumption, the commercial sector of the city operates according to segmented protocols. Hotels can receive visitors and respect the maximum capacity of 50%. On the beaches, street vendors can return to work with two sets of tables and chairs, just as kiosks can serve up to 20 tables and chairs.
To comply with preventive measures and safety regulations, the municipality announced the intensification of the 24-hour inspection.
