The family of the 77-year-old woman, who died diagnosed with Covid-19 in Cairu, in southern Bahia, denied on Wednesday (13) that her coffin had been opened before the burial. The family also said that the city government did not tell them there was a suspicion of coronavirus contamination and released the wake. Organ denies that it did not warn the family members.
According to family members, Nilzete Porfiria dos Santos Souza lived in the Gamboa district of Cairu. The old woman had a fever on Sunday (3) and was taken to a local health center on Tuesday (5), when she was evaluated by a doctor, who said that the symptoms could be the beginning of pneumonia or urinary tract infection, because old.
Relatives reported that the doctor gave her medicine and asked the old woman to return to the place on Thursday (7), when she would attend the place. On Thursday, Nilzete’s family took the elderly woman, who had worsened and had high temperature and pressure, to the health center.
It was when, after being treated at the clinic, Nilzete was transferred to a hospital in the municipality of Valença, where she died. The old woman’s family emphasized that at no time did the doctor speak on suspicion of Covid-19.
According to Nilzete’s relatives, the old woman’s body was released on Thursday night. The funeral home placed the victim’s body in the coffin and closed it. According to them, the stele was made with the coffin, which had a closed glass lid.
Relatives also said that the only time the coffin was left open was when a funeral service employee, wearing a mask, glove, and overalls, arranged the body. Besides her, only the granddaughter of the old woman accompanied the preparation, in the same environment, also with gloves and a mask.
Nilzete’s family said the funeral home sealed the coffin and said it could not be opened. They said they respected the company’s decision. Family members also said the hospital took the old woman’s blood for analysis after her death Thursday night, but did not mention Covid’s suspicion.
Nilzete’s funeral and burial took place on Friday (8), at 8 in the morning. The result with the diagnosis of Covid-19 only came out on Monday (11).

Five people who were in the wake of the old woman tested positive for the disease. According to the city council, everyone is in isolation from the house.
Nilzete’s family said that after the old woman’s result came out, the city got in touch and all family members did rapid tests. The five who tested positive have no symptoms and are away from home. The family believes they contracted the disease while the old woman was home, before she died.
The old woman lived with three daughters and a granddaughter. The other members of the family lived in houses close to his. The family does not believe that the relatives were not contaminated during the wake.
The people who tested positive are:
- A son of the old woman;
- One of the daughters who lives in the same house where she lived;
- A daughter who lives in a neighboring house;
- A son-in-law who lives in a neighboring house (his wife has not tested positive);
- A son who lives in the house above, but who had contact with the old woman;
The Cairu Health Secretariat confirmed that the family of the first Covid-19 victim in the municipality was informed and guided by the Health team responsible for collecting the samples for the coronavirus test, before the body was released.
The agency said that it denied having authorized the stele, because there were suspicions of Covid-19 and reaffirmed that the coffin left the Holy House of Mercy of Valença, sealed, following all the protocols and guidelines of the Ministry of Health.
Cairu’s health secretary Italuana Guimarães said she did not have a health team on site during the wake of Nilzete. He also said that at no time did he say that those who tested positive were infected during the wake or how they were infected.
According to the last Epidemiological Bulletin published earlier this Wednesday (13), Cairu has 10 confirmed cases with Covid-19, one death and 14 suspicions ruled out.
