The municipality of Santa Cruz do Sul confirmed, on the afternoon of Monday 11, the first death of a resident of the municipality by covid-19. This is a 67-year-old woman who was an intern at the geriatric clinic in Laranjeiras.

In a statement, the city administration said he died on Friday the 8th. Initially, the death was treated as a result of natural causes. However, the city found that she died of a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), such as those caused by the new coronavirus.

The municipality even requested that the body not be buried. However, given the impossibility of conducting tests to confirm the true cause of death, the burial was allowed on Monday morning 11.

Despite the lack of laboratory tests or rapid tests, the Municipality of Santa Cruz do Sul and the State Epidemiological Surveillance, through clinical criteria, confirm this as the first death of a city resident by Covid-19.

Also tonight, the case numbers in Santa Cruz were updated. The total, which in the last update was 28 cases, increased to 46 confirmed infections. Of these, 24 are related to the outbreak at the Laranjeiras clinic. The municipality is still investigating 21 suspected cases.

The municipality learned of a death related to the geriatric clinic in Laranjeiras that occurred on Friday, May 8. Initially, the 67-year-old woman’s death was treated as natural, which was confirmed in a death certificate. However, according to the preliminary information obtained by the Municipality, the resident died due to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
Since this situation was not notified to the Municipal Health Department, it was not possible to perform a rapid test, blood collection and material collection for the Covid-19 examination due to the preparation of the body and the thanatopraxia procedure, performed before the science town hall
On Sunday night, already informed of the events, the Municipality requested that the body not be buried for an autopsy. In view of the information received from the state government, that it would not be possible to investigate the death, and the impossibility of carrying it out through the Legal Medical Institute (IML), the City Council, after meeting with the Public Ministry, decided to release the body for burial on Monday. The resident was officially considered the first death of a Santa Cruz resident, classified in this way by the State Epidemiological Surveillance due to clinical epidemiological criteria. At 5:20 p.m. Monday, Santa Cruz recorded 46 cases of local residents who confirmed Covid-19. Of these, 24 are related to the outbreak at the Laranjeiras clinic. In addition to them, Santa Cruz investigates 21 more suspected cases of city residents. Another 10 residents of municipalities in the region had their confirmed disease in Santa Cruz. Among them, two are related to the outbreak in the geriatric clinic. Three outbreak-related patients are still hospitalized.
