The Pronto Socorro 28 de Agosto Public Hospital, one of the main hospitals in Manaus, has an empty floor, while the other health professionals face, without the proper equipment, the overcrowding of patients, due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus.
Amazonas is one of the most affected in the country by the new coronavirus pandemic. Data from the Health Surveillance Foundation show that 6,683 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 548 deaths.
“Here is a room that was disabled six days ago to receive [pacientes] of covid-19 and we are waiting and management has not yet organized the situation, “says an employee of the unit, while recording a video on the 4th floor of the hospital.
The recording shows five living rooms, each with six empty beds.
“I don’t know how long this organization will last. We are waiting for maintenance to receive these Covid-19 patients, who are dying at the doors of other units and even here in the Pink Room, in the emergency room.”
Pink Room is an area for suspected patients or those with confirmed diagnoses of covid-19. A doctor who admitted his father to the scene described it as a “death room.”
“What I saw were horror scenes. I think there were more than 60 people suffering there without medical attention. The Pink Room is the Death Room.”
On Monday (27), health professionals protested the working conditions in the hospital. On video, a nurse stated that there is no PPE (personal protective equipment) to work in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) sector.
Government response
The State Department of Health (Susam) affirms that the opening of the rooms on the fourth floor follows a plan, implemented as the need for beds increases.
“The planning includes the relocation of non-covid-19 patients to other sectors or other units in the network and a complete reorganization of the hospital flow, the preparation of human resources, medications and supplies.”
Until today, Hospital 28 de Agosto had already assigned 240 beds to serve Covid in the wings of the ground floor (pink room), first, fourth and fifth floors.
“The rooms on the fourth floor, filmed by the professional, were ready this Sunday and will support the Pink Room for the hospitalization of stable patients, who do not need an ICU.”
“The nursing professionals, including the author of the video, participated in a meeting on Saturday morning with HPS management on August 28, an opportunity in which the planning and the deadline to open the fourth floor beds. ” , read in Susam’s note.
