When the workers at the Prohope private hospital in Cajazeiras VIII noticed, they already had symptoms of covid-19. Everything indicates that the contamination reached the unit transversally, from an employee of the Santo Antônio Hospital, which belongs to the Irmã Dulce Social Work (Osid), where at least 63 other health professionals were infected. In Prohope, 25 people have been fired since the start of the pandemic on suspicion of infection, with nine confirmed cases, as confirmed by the hospital itself.
“We noticed when a nurse who worked at Irmã Dulce started showing symptoms. She was not to blame, did not know she was infected and continued working because until then she had no symptoms. Generally, we work in more than one unit, she showed symptoms and other people appeared, such as doctors, nurses, technicians, physical therapists, ”says a Prohope collaborator, who preferred to preserve her identity.
The professionals of the house began to try to understand the origin of the infection, since at that time the unit was practically empty of patients and concluded that it was going from employee to employee. Even due to the low patient occupancy rate, the hospital even suspended worker contracts based on labor agreements that the federal government allowed. “When cases began to appear, some employees were even working with symptoms because there was no one to cover them because there were already people attested,” he adds.
In fact, the hospital said in a note that when the first case of a symptomatic employee was identified, there were no positive patients admitted to the institution. But internally, when more confirmations were made, officials feared that Prohope would arrive in the same situation as Osid, where Nursing technician Rosana dos Santos Cerqueira, 44, died after being contaminated in the unit.. In total, 203 health professionals in the state have already been contaminated, according to the bulletin of this Saturday (2), from the Department of Health of Bahia (Sesab)
“Prohope created an isolated unit to receive only one greedy patient, but because the demand was not high, there was still one patient who leaked. The patient who appeared with suspicion of covid-19 ended up in the general ICU, which ends up mixing with other patients, ”he denounces.
PPE and limited testing
According to the employee, personal protective equipment (PPE) has been rationed and each professional is entitled to a kit of three surgical masks for each 12-hour shift. According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, the ideal would be double, since each mask of this can only be used for up to 2 hours.
Professionals who were identified with symptoms were evaluated and fired, but some remain suspicious if they contracted the virus, since they had contact with colleagues who are ill. “I had contact with infected people and if I caught it I don’t know, but I still don’t have symptoms. I think you should call everyone soon and give them a test. I have many concerns, I am afraid that my colleagues will die and expose themselves ”, he says.
Wanted, the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) said that Prohope is part of the network to fight covid-19 and that the hospital unit has beds from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in association with the city council. The secretariat said it is investigating the situation.
Prohope positioning
CORREIO contacted the management of the Prohope Hospital, which reported, in a note, that the institution has “taken all necessary measures to safeguard the safety of employees and patients, contributing to the non-proliferation of the virus,” the document says. Management reinforced that the absences of the 25 professionals do not represent effective contamination and that it has taken this measure as a preventive form in terms of medical care for employees and patients.
Prohope’s chief marketing officer Joilson Matos spoke to the report, noting that Bahia has a community transmission record for the disease, made official on March 19, and that the institution preaches for safety, but admits that it is difficult to promote a blockade. total unit. . “We have nothing to hide, it is a pandemic. It is not easy for any health institution. No matter how carefully you follow caution, no one can predict it. The infection today is communal, but we must minimize this to the maximum extent within the institution, ”he replied.
Hospital officials state that any employee with flu-like symptoms immediately withdraws from activities for 15 days with a recommendation for isolation, regardless of laboratory tests. The unit has approximately 490 employees, and a large proportion of them are employed by other health institutions, “making it impossible to accurately trace the source of the contamination.”
Prohope also noted that there is a shortage of PPE across the country and that manufacturers have been charging exorbitant values for the items, prompting the hospital to choose to manufacture TNT (non-woven) surgical masks and waterproof scrubs locally. Prevention materials kits, depending on the unit, are delivered daily with the employee’s signature.
The institution also said that it conducted training on the correct use of the equipment with all professionals, including the provision of video classes on dressing and undressing, the procedure to put on and take off the PPE. Finally, Prohope announced that, 10 days ago, it adopted different tickets for common visits and flu emergencies (cough, runny nose, and related symptoms).
“With confidence, we affirm that all technical standards are met and that the Prohope Hospital Board has done everything possible to guarantee the safety of our employees. Unfortunately, this is an uncontrollable problem, in which 70% of the world population It is obliged to contract this virus, due to its high spread and contagion. Whether in a hospital setting, for delivery, in a market, or even in public transport. What we can and are doing is guarantee security throughout the process so that our employees work safely and minimize the maximum risk of contamination, “concludes the note from the institution.
