Rescue teams rescued 11 miners trapped two weeks ago hundreds of meters deep in a gold mine in eastern China on Sunday as they raced against time to save the remaining ten.

The first of the miners surfaced at 11 am (0 am in Brasilia), state television CCTV reported. Throughout the day, ten more workers were rescued.

The situation of the miners and the rescue operation carried out generate enormous commotion and media attention throughout the country.

This rapid advance in rescue operations was made possible by the sudden release of a mine ventilation shaft, according to the Chinese Xinhua news agency, citing the command center for these operations.

The first of the rescued miners, “physically weak,” was taken to a hospital, CCTV said.

After rescuing these 11 miners, ten more workers remained buried Sunday afternoon since the January 10 explosion at the Qixia gold mine in eastern Shandong province.

Rescuers have been trying for two weeks to rescue workers blocked several hundred meters underground and threatened by rising water. One of the trapped miners could not resist his injuries and died last week.

The deflagration blocked the ventilation shaft and damaged the cable car that allowed the miners to rise to the surface.

On Sunday morning, the enormous obstacles blocking the shaft fell to the bottom, facilitating the miners’ “ascent” to the surface. As a result, drilling operations were suspended.

Public television footage initially showed a massive drill on Sunday bringing to the surface a wheelbarrow with rescuers and a man in a mask. He seemed powerless to stand up.

This first miner was found when rescuers were trying to reach a group of ten miners. They were contacted a week ago, trapped about 580 meters deep. Another miner in this group died from injuries caused by the explosion.

Thanks to a metal cable inserted through a conduit drilled in the rock, rescuers were able to send food, medicine and telephones to this group of miners found.

In the sequence, the images show rescuers pulling out the other miners, who were wearing sunglasses to protect themselves from the light. One of them held hands and seemed to be praying.

Drilling operations were complicated by the geological structure of the soil, made of particularly hard rocks like granite.

On Friday, relief crews estimated that it should take at least two weeks to release all workers, despite the frantic pace of drilling work.
