Two girls, aged 11 and 16, were shot by a military police officer during a chase in Vila Mariquinhas, in the Juliana neighborhood, in the northern region of Belo Horizonte, this Saturday (5). The victims were rescued by residents of the region: they received medical attention and are not at risk of death. The case unleashed the revolt of the neighbors, who denounced negligence and lack of help.
According to the police file, the military personnel were chasing a suspect who was carrying a firearm and was driving a motorcycle, almost running over people who were walking down the street. One of the police officers and the suspect ended up falling off their motorcycles while passing through an open sewer and began to run. After ordering the suspect to drop the gun, the policeman fired, but the suspect swerved and the bullet ended up hitting the two girls.
For BHAZ, the 16-year-old, whose name will remain, said that she had gone out with a friend to go to the supermarket when she was shot. The shot grazed his left thigh, but went through the right thigh of the youngest victim, only 11 years old. Local residents mobilized to take the girls to hospital, but the teenager says she did not even see a police officer after she was shot.
‘Doesn’t help’
“When I came back from the supermarket, when I stepped onto the corner of the street, I didn’t see any police. I only heard one shot. At the moment I did not feel any pain, but I saw that the neighbors began to agitate. It was then that I felt the blood rush down my leg. I looked at my friend, scared, and said, ‘My God, what are we going to do?’ I never imagined this would happen to me, ”says the teenager.
The young woman did not know the other victim, who was hit hard by the gunshot. The friend took her to a bar, where they closed the doors and tried to calm down, while the locals yelled, in rebellion, at the police. In the videos circulating on social networks, it is possible to see desperate and angry neighbors over the shooting that affected two innocent girls.
Help
One of the residents of the region took the adolescent to the Risoleta Neves hospital, and the boy was also taken to the health center by members of the community. Until then, no military had contacted the victims.
“Before the shooting, I even saw the police running down the street, but when I heard the shot I thought it came from a bandit, I didn’t think it was from a policeman. But at the time it seemed they were more concerned with arresting the man than the victims. They didn’t help, they just kept coming down behind him, ”he says.
“She was very scared, she was crying in pain and not even the drugs worked for her,” the young woman said of the boy who was shot. “I was already calmer, I tried not to despair. My aunt later spoke with her relatives and they said that she had tests done and she’s fine, but she still feels pain, ”she adds. According to the police file, the boy and the 11-year-old adolescent were discharged from the hospital and will not need to be operated on.
Military crime
The police officer responsible for the shooting received a statement of arrest in flagrante delicto for the military crime of bodily injury, in the guilty modality, with proof of exclusion of illegality by legitimate defense. The firearm used and the motorcycle were seized and it was confirmed that the military only fired one shot. He injured his finger when he fell off his bicycle and received care at the Venda Nova UPA (Emergency Care Unit), and was released.
Also according to the PM, “the other acts of the Military Judicial Police were adopted by the person in charge of the procedure duly delegated by the Unit Command.” The agents involved visited the homes of the victims, showed solidarity and offered to pay for the necessary medicines and transportation to the hospital, which was necessary.
‘The minimum’
“I think it was the least they could have done, after not helping the victims at the time of the shooting,” says the young woman affected by the shooting. Wanted by the BHAZ, Major Flávio Santiago, spokesman for the PM of Minas Gerais, regretted what happened and reinforced that legal measures were taken.
“We always strive to avoid, in this urban battle, any kind of harm to society. Unfortunately, this happened, but the army itself is already voluntarily paying for the medicines of the children involved. The police are giving their full support to the family. Of course, the measures of the Military Judicial Police were taken. Our role is very complex, urban combat is very severe and does not allow us to make any type of mistake, “he said.
Dead cousins
In Rio de Janeiro, two cousins, ages 4 and 7, died during a shooting last Friday (4). Emilly Victoria, 4, and Rebeca Beatriz Rodrigues dos Santos, 7, were playing outside their front door when they were hit.
Rio de Janeiro Military Police said they did not fire during the shooting. The weapons of the agents involved were seized. Rebeca’s grandmother, Lidia da Silva Moreira Santos, however, claimed that the fatal shots were indeed fired by the military police of that state.
“They [os policiais] he stopped and fired, ”said Rebeca’s grandmother, who says she saw the scene. “It wasn’t anyone who told me and I’m not even imagining anything. I don’t smoke or drink, ”he added (Read the full story here).
