Niki Kerameos stressed that the school must open with all its students and with the full implementation of the measures, as suggested by the Infectious Diseases Committee, based on scientific data on the evolution of the pandemic.

The Minister of Education noted that the announced measures will evolve and may become stricter or more lenient depending on the evolution of the pandemic. He stressed that the use of the mask will be mandatory indoors and will be distributed free of charge to students and teachers of public and private schools. He also stressed that masks and canteens will be distributed, so that children do not drink water directly from the taps, to all students, public and private schools.

He explained that education emphasis is placed on proper mask use from Kindergarten through 3rd grade, while EODY’s special instructions for proper mask use and mask specifications will be sent to schools. and will be posted on the Ministry’s website.

Measures for schools

The Minister of Education reiterated the measures taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, which, as she highlighted, are being implemented following a recommendation from the National Commission.

These are the following:

  • the mandatory use of the mask, with special emphasis on education in the proper use of the mask in children from kindergarten to primary DG, together with the all-important hand hygiene and regular ventilation of enclosed spaces,
  • the extensive information of students, teachers and parents (through updated EODY instructions, informative videos and sessions with doctors who will visit the country’s schools through the cooperation of the Ministry of Education with the Panhellenic Medical Association),
  • expanding the school all day to cover more students at 4pm and thus to reduce its association with vulnerable population groups, i.e. grandparents – the Government has secured funds in excess of 100 million euros for this program and extends a wide call for use by parents,
  • with the care of local self-government, the free distribution of masks to all teachers and students, antiseptics as well as the thorough cleaning of the country’s schools in accordance with the relevant EODY instructions,
  • sampling by EODY in schools, according to the EODY protocol,
  • provision for different breaks to limit the coexistence of multiple groups of students,
  • the personalized operation of the dining rooms,
  • school celebrations by department,
  • student competitions with protection measures,
  • do not take school trips and conferences,
  • visits (e.g. to public buildings, museums) by department,
  • carrying out sports activities outdoors, and if sports are in groups, in small fixed groups,
  • not holding school championships,
  • laboratories, computers and musical instruments with provision for cleaning materials and equipment after each use,
  • the strong recommendation for the use of a hermit crab, a solution that limits the amount of water directly from the tap (and therefore the risk of virus transmission) and is a beneficial solution for the environment.
