The Minister of Culture and Sports, despite the unprecedented disaster at the archaeological site of Mycenae, affirms that “the state mechanism reacted (…)” and feels “proud” that “we have not the slightest damage in the monuments”. “For the first time in history, Mycenae was burned,” says the Curator of Antiquities of Argolida.
The effort of the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, continues to beautify the situation and the magnitude of the damage caused by the fire (08/30) at the archaeological site of Mycenae.
From the floor of Parliament, the minister, after initially stating that the fire at an emblematic archaeological site “is in itself a sad fact” was quick to value as “extremely important” that “the state mechanism has been mobilized in some way and so it has foreseen, so as not to damage the antiquities of the archaeological site of Mycenae “.
Lina Mendoni stressed that “the fact of the fire is regrettable, but she is glad that we did not have the least damage to the monuments of this archaeological site.”
The minister says she is “proud” that the Mycenae fire has been “taken care of” and reiterated that “the burned grass obviously gives an unpleasant image.” “But they were burned grass and there was no damage to the antiques.”
Lina Mendoni’s new statements come on the occasion of a question from SYRIZA MP Panagiotis Skouroliakos. The official opposition deputy expressed her sadness over the fire at the archaeological site of Mycenae, stating that the public is awaiting answers from those responsible if it would be possible to prevent the fire at an emblematic archaeological site. Mr. Skouroliakos also stated that the spectacle is horrible and is far from the landscaping image that the government attempts.
“Mycenae burned for the first time in history”
The admission that the archaeological site of Mycenae had never been burned to this day, was made by the Curator of Antiquities of Argolida Alkistis Papadimitriou, responding to the head of Civil Protection of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Giannis Ragousis who was in the zone.
A delegation from SYRIZA, consisting of Giannis Giolas, MP from Argolida, Giannis Ragousis, Head of Citizen Protection and Panos Skouroliakos, Head of Culture, visited the archaeological site of Mycenae at noon.
“It is not common for important archaeological sites to be burned in our country. This is the second time. The first time was in 2007 when Olympia was burned, in the great fire of the Peloponnese then. And again in such an important and emblematic archaeological site here in Mycenae we have fire. Both times they were with the New Democracy government, probably by accident, ”said Panos Skouroliakos. “Obviously there are responsibilities, you have to look for them and in the end you have to assign responsibilities. The first and indisputable conclusion is that the archaeological site was handed over defenseless in the flames because obviously the state of Mr. Mitsotakis had gone swimming, “said Giannis Ragousis among others.
A little later, in a post on social networks, Alexis Tsipras attributes responsibilities to the government as “in another matter, it refuses to assume any responsibility and resorts again to falsifying reality.”
Autopsy in the area
In the morning, the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni carried out an autopsy at the scene. She then held a comprehensive meeting, with the participation of all stakeholders.
According to the minister, “the museum was not in any danger. The fire did not touch the Lion Gate, the monuments of Burial Circle A, the northern slope of the Acropolis, the cyclopean walls.”
