One of the “great” figures of French and St. Etienne soccer, Robert Erben, “left” at the age of 81.
Iconic St. Etienne coach Robert Erben died at the age of 81, according to French club president Roland Romage.
Erben has been hospitalized since April 25 at CHU de Saint-Etienne with severe heart and lung failure (not related to the coronavirus epidemic).
The deceased served Saint-Etienne as a footballer (defensive and defensive midfielder) from 1957 to 1972. With the “crowns” he won five championships and three Cups, counting 509 appearances, and played 23 times with the French national team. His serious injury at the 1966 World Cup was the beginning of the end of his soccer career.
He headed to training and worked for his heart team from 1972 to 1983 and from 1987 to 1990. He won four championships, three Cups with St. Etienne. The Greens owe much of their fame to the 1976 Champions Cup, which ended in a loss to Bayern Munich in Glasgow.
