The renovation of the old PYRKAL factory in the Ymittos area with its transformation into a park with the proposed name “Andreas Lentakis”, which will be a “lung” of green for the wider area and will house the combined services of Nine Ministries and other organizations, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced today during his visit to the historic industrial unit.
The intervention will free up public areas for citizens, creating an 80-acre park, something that has been a request from residents for decades. At the same time, more than a billion euros will be saved in the long term, based on the income that the State pays today in 7 or 8 years.
“The plan drawn up by the Government contemplates the creation of a new green lung in the center of the city,” said the Prime Minister from the premises of the former PYRKAL, which now belongs to the Hellenic Defense Systems. The project is expected to be delivered in about five years and the relocation of public services is expected to take place in the period 2025 – 2026. The investment will be made through PPPs and is estimated at 250 million euros.
The development of the property allows for the substantial improvement of the operation of many public services, which are now scattered in dozens of rented buildings, straining the public coffers. It is fully in line with the needs of the local community, since the removal of the plant from the urban fabric has been requested by the general urban plan of 1996.
“We have the opportunity to give 120 acres, 80 acres in a park, 40 acres in public areas to the citizens of Dafni and Ymittos,” emphasized Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“We are located three kilometers from the center of Athens, very close to a Metro station. The possibility of this space to house 9 Ministries will legally lead to the economic improvement of the region. At the same time, many properties in the city center will be released, which can be used for other purposes, ”said the prime minister.
At the same time, the properties that will be vacated by the State may be used for residential, commercial and cultural uses, contributing to the revitalization of downtown Athens.

Today the State rents a total of 141 buildings to house Ministries. The operating costs and annual income of the Ministries and services that will be transferred to the new park exceed 33 million euros, while in many cases the facilities that are rented do not meet current environmental criteria.
Given the savings from the transfer of government services, the direct and indirect income from the projects and the exploitation of the public real estate that will be released, it is estimated that the development of the park will generate a saving of one billion euros for public funds in the depth of 25 to 30 years.

The renovated complex is located a very short distance from the “Dafni” Metro station, which means that there will be no traffic congestion, while the plans for the new Line 4 call for the construction of another station in the area.

It offers, therefore, the logic of the creation of this new government park, a unique opportunity for an important urban regeneration that on the one hand will substantially change the face of the city and on the other hand will offer important opportunities for better functioning. of public administration in new buildings, respectful with the environment and, of course, much more respectful with the employees.

In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that the Government has launched a series of important urban regenerations, obviously starting with the most important project of Elliniko, proceeding to the use of the park’s spaces, in Tatoi, the relocation of the Korydallos prison, its former “CHROPEI” industrial estate, which will become a technology park, acting in the Municipality of Agioi Anargyroi of the old train parking lot. So, join this cycle of important urban regeneration and our current intervention with the creation of this new mixed space that will house 9 Ministries and many important government services, but at the same time will create an important recreational and green area for the citizens of the Dafni municipality. and Ymittos, but also of all the inhabitants of the wider area of eastern Athens.
I wish, hope and am sure that this project will proceed with the speed it deserves so that we can soon witness the first works, first the relocation of the Greek defense systems in Lavrio and then the utilization of this beautiful truly unique space. that in the coming years it will completely change its form for the benefit mainly of the citizens of its Municipality.
