On Friday, November 13, 2020, during the excavation work within the framework of the project “Construction of sewer networks and connections of the properties of the 4th and 5th Municipal Community” of the Municipality of Athens, supervised by the Athens Antiquities Office , in front of the Sacred Temple of Agia Irini, at number 25 Aiolou street and at a depth of 1.30 m. from the road, the head of Ermou was revealed, representing the god in a mature age, apparently a fragment of a hermetic column. The iconography of the sculpture is typical of the Hermes Propylaeus type of Alkamenos ”.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports informs the above with an announcement, completing the following:
“The head was mounted in use on the wall on the south side of a modern sewer connection. The find, which is preserved in good condition, was immediately transferred to a deposit of the Ephorate of Antiquities. It is an original work, probably from the end of the 4th century or the beginning of the 3rd century BC. The hermetic columns were founded on crossroads and streets and served as road markings. “
