The Secretary General of the Special Guard, Stratos Mavroeidakos, spoke with SKAI and the TODAY program about the incident of a citizen who was beaten by a policeman yesterday in Nea Smyrni Square, and pointed out that DIAS policemen should not have hit anyone .
“The DIAS team should not even be involved in this incident. It was not their responsibility.” Even if he is attacked by criminals, he has a plan on how he should react, “he said.
According to Mr. Mavroidakos, yesterday at 2:00 PM there was an anonymous phone call to the Immediate Action Business Center for a crowd of 500 in Nea Smyrni Square.
As he explained, this phenomenon is frequent and the police usually go, make recommendations, impose some fines and nothing is done.
However, yesterday after the overcrowding phone call, two DIAS teams and a policeman with his driver attended, divided into 3 groups and controls were carried out for more than 40 minutes, during which 19 fines were confirmed.
“Suddenly, 30 people came out of a well-known hangout in the anti-authoritarian space that exists at the foot of the square, threw t-shirts, shouted slogans in favor of Koufontina and the well-known anti-police. The young man shown in the video has been arrested, along with 10 other people, because they attacked the police, insulted them and tried to take off their gloves. People rebelled, they are under pressure, they are looking for a reason and the mistake was made. “They pressured her because a glop came out that normally shouldn’t have come out and the public reacted,” stressed the secretary general of the Special Guard.
He added that these people, who wounded 2 policemen, were later dispersed. “The policeman is sure that he recognized him as one of those who assaulted him – he clearly states this in his testimony – and tried to arrest him.”
Mr Mavroidakos concluded by noting that “the incident in fragments, as we see it, is not a picture of a Greek police officer, it should not have gone wrong, but it is not the fault of the colleague”.
